SunTube project planning

Plan your pitched roof SunTube project

Use these planning questions alongside the product information above to prepare your roof, tube route and installation quote.

Can a rigid sun tunnel pass through an awkward loft?

An awkward loft is a route-planning problem. Identify the rafters, joists, stored items and services, then sketch the line between roof and ceiling. Sometimes a modest shift in either end creates a much simpler route without changing the part of the room that benefits from daylight.

Intura offers adjustable elbows and extension sections. The ST35 extension product is 60 cm long, and the published system route can extend up to approximately 6 metres. Confirm the assembly for your diameter and keep bends and excess length to a minimum.

Our UK sun tunnel buying guide explains why tube reflectivity, collector design and route geometry should be considered together. No reflectivity claim removes the need to check where the light is collected or how the tube reaches the room.

Keep the loft route and the thermal boundary separate in your plan

Where is the insulation layer: at roof level, ceiling level, or within a different build-up? That detail matters when a daylight tube crosses between an outdoor or unheated zone and a heated room. Identify the thermal and air-sealing strategy before closing the ceiling.

The optional EcoPower element gives Intura SunTube a double- or triple-glazed thermal upgrade. Select the diameter and assembly needed for the project, then ask the adviser to review the installation detail at the building envelope.

Do not treat a product specification as a promise of no heat loss or no condensation. Moisture levels, junction details and workmanship affect the installed result. For an energy model or a project with demanding thermal targets, request the underlying configuration information.

Ask the installer how access to the diffuser and any optional accessories will be retained. If electrical lighting is planned in the same location, confirm component compatibility and arrange the wiring as part of the project.

What to send before ordering a pitched roof SunTube

  1. A photograph of the roof covering and the proposed collector position.
  2. Roof pitch, covering type and any unusual roof details.
  3. A loft photograph or sketch showing obstacles along the route.
  4. Distance from the collector to the finished room ceiling, following the actual route.
  5. Room dimensions, ceiling height and preferred diffuser position.
  6. The required insulation option and any planned accessories.

This information helps avoid missing tube components or a kit that does not match the roof. A roofer should confirm the final specification on site. Download the Intura SunTube brochure and consult the installation resources for the next stage.

Let’s clear up the confusion around sun tunnel names for pitched roofs

Tubular daylighting systems have various names, depending on the manufacturer and supplier. Intura SunTube is our tubular daylighting range for pitched roofs, bringing daylight from a pitched roof through the loft to a ceiling diffuser. You may hear this type of daylight product referred to as sun tunnels, solar tunnels, solar tubes, sun pipes, tubular skylights, daylight tubes or light tunnels.

Other descriptions include sun tubes, sunlight tubes, sky tunnels, solar skylights, tubular daylighting, daylight pipes, light tubes and light pipes. These names can help you recognise the type of product, but the name alone does not tell you its diameter, collector material, tube design or insulation specification.

For your project, start with the Intura SunTube kits for pitched roofs, then confirm the roof connection, tube route and optional insulation. Our sun tunnel cost guide explains what to include in the complete budget.

More installation questions

Can I fit it into a slate roof?

Ask Intura to check the roof and the appropriate detail before ordering. Roof coverings and kit configurations differ, so suitability should not be assumed from a general description of pitched roofs.

Can the tube go around a rafter?

A route may be possible using approved elbows or by moving the collector or diffuser slightly. Keep the route efficient and do not alter structural members without the appropriate design advice.

How long can an Intura sun tunnel be?

The published extension range supports a route up to approximately 6 metres. The practical choice depends on diameter, bends, shading and required daylight. A longer permitted route is not a guarantee of a particular room light level.
